If you know or even suspect that you have experienced a concussion, it is of utmost importance that you seek proper care after it happens. Your brain controls everything in your body and everything that you do, and if it has been injured it must be given ample time to heal. All too often, people experience concussions and get back to their everyday activities too soon and then they have setbacks or injure themselves again, worse than the initial injury.
When it comes to your brain, you cannot be too careful. Many times, people do not want to go to the doctor because they are unsure if a concussion has happened, and they feel that since they aren’t one hundred percent certain, they don’t want to go in case they are wrong. They don’t want to waste the doctor’s time. Some people may suspect that they have had a concussion, but they feel that they don’t have the time to seek medical care, so they skip it.
We are living in the information age, and at any moment we are a few keystrokes away from learning about health problems. A person could fall and hit their head but not lose consciousness or break the skin, which would require stitches. So, the person may get up carefully and evaluate how they feel, but also tell themselves it would be too much bother to go to the doctor. They don’t want to arrange for someone to drive them, or care for their children, pets or other responsibilities. They may feel unable to miss work, so they try to follow guidelines they see online and care for themselves, all because they think that they don’t have time to see a doctor.
It doesn’t matter if you see your personal doctor, or go to a walk-in clinic, an urgent care center, or the ER. All doctors know that the brain, its health and concussions in general are nothing to mess around with. They will always err on the side of caution and will not make you feel silly or as if you are wasting their time by coming in.
In fact, there are even doctors who focus on concussion care and how best to care for an injured brain. If your concussion is more than just a mild bump on the head which needs a few days of rest, then you mat be sent to see such a doctor. They will be able to evaluate you, perform tests or scans on your brain, and monitor your recovery.
Whether you go to a clinic first, or go immediately to a concussion doctor, it is very important that you follow the suggestions given to you by the doctor. If they say that you must lay down and rest without using electronics or even reading a book, then you must do this. You must let your brain rest so it can heal. If you are on your computer working, or playing games on your tablet or cell phone, or even going low tech by reading a paperback book, you are making your brain do work, and if it is working it cannot focus on healing.
