Have you walked into a gym and been discouraged by the people around you? Have you set a goal and then given up? Have you put something off and said you would do it tomorrow? If you answered yes, to any of these questions, then you are not alone. Many people set goals for themselves but give up for one reason or another. Our office encourages you to not compare yourself to someone else. You are your own person and are different from the person next to you.
If you always make excuses about working out then you will never do it.The next time you walk into the gym and feel discouraged because the person next to you is in better shape or runs faster than you, remember that that person has worked to achieve their “goals”. That person also had to start at the beginning and commit to improve their fitness level.
You can achieve your goals if you set your mind to it. The first place to start is setting goals that are measurable and realistic. The only person you should compare yourself to is yourself. Write down how far you run, bike, or swim and how fast you do it in. Then the next time you exercise measure your improvement.
It takes hard work to get in shape so stop saying you are going to workout tomorrow because tomorrow will always be tomorrow. DO IT TODAY. Don’t set too high of goals set smaller goals that can be reached. You need the satisfaction of reaching a goal to be encouraged to reach your next goal.
One of my favorite quotes is by Newt Gingrich; “Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” I love this quote because when I am running and am tired I tell myself I have to push my limits to get better. I have to remind myself that in order for me to get better and stronger it will take, time, effort, perseverance, and motivation.
Here are a few inspirational quotes for you:
• “Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they’ve got a second.”~ William James
• “Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.” ~Napoleon Hill
• “Consider the postage stamp: its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.” ~ Josh Billings
